Top 5 women’s Halloween costumes that feature over-the-top hairstyles

(As published in the “Elle-gant Style” section of the Mill Creek Influence Magazine, October 2012.)

Halloween is, without a doubt, one of my favorite holidays. I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m a very dark person; I just like the theatrics of it all. It’s the one time of year when we can throw our inhibitions aside, take on an alternate persona, and appreciate that everyone else is having a ball doing the exact same thing!

I own a hair salon though, not a holiday store. So in an effort to find a hair angle to this story I’ve decided to put together a list of the top 5 Women’s Halloween costumes that feature completely over-the-top hairstyles. If you love your locks like we do, then perhaps these will spark some costume ideas for you.

  • #5: Evira – A Halloween classic. You won’t find Snookie on my list because, let’s be honest, she just copied Elvira’s look.
  • #4: Catwoman – There is one at every party and most, this year, will go the Anne Hathaway route and show off their flowing brown locks. Too easy! Be unique and consider Michelle Pfeiffer’s hot mess. Rip some holes in the mask, pull your hair through and tease it up! (TIMELY IDEA: Repurpose an old Catwoman costume into Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow character from The Avengers.)
  • #3: Jessica Rabbit – Okay, Roger Rabbit isn’t exactly a recent movie but consider Jessica’s likeness to Christina Hendricks’ character on Mad Men and the fact that red hair is red hot right now!
  • #2: Princess Merida – Okay, I wanted to go with Katniss from Hunger Games because I’m sure that will be a much more popular costume (and I loved the movie), but Brave’s Princess Merida uses a super cool bow and arrow as well, plus she has much better hair!
  • #1: Effie Trinket – Okay, I confess. I had Lady Gaga in here at #1, but when I mentioned Katniss at #2, I immediately thought of Effie. With her pink hair and indelible style, how could she NOT be #1? Okay, so, Lady Gaga at #2? Nah, because then I’d have to renumber my list (sorry, LG).

Experimenting with new looks, including hairstyles, is part of the fun of Halloween. Whatever character you plan to portray, a visit to Elle Marie can help you achieve the ultimate look!

I have a confession to make. Halloween truly is in my blood. In addition to the salon, I also produce the Haunted Nightmare Haunted Attraction at Craven Farm in Snohomish. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Boys and Girls Clubs of Snohomish County. If you’re looking for a fun Halloween event and are feeling brave, come visit Friday and Saturday nights in October from 7-11pm.
